Kathryn “Kathy” Anne Hopman-Greene, 61, of Newton passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the Iowa City Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A celebration of her life will be held from 12-6 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Newton Arboretum
Kathy, the daughter of Donald and Adelheid “Heidi” (Wolf) Patterson, was born on February 28, 1964, in Frankfurt, Germany where her dad was serving in the military. As a child she would live in several places, but the family always called Newton, Iowa home. Kathy was a 1982 graduate of Newton High School. For over 25 years, Kathy cleaned floors for the Grinnell Fareway and other stores. She also worked at Hy-Vee for many years. Kathy was currently working as a Para-Professional for the Newton Community School District at Woodrow Wilson Elementary. She was a master gardener, and her home was filled with many beautiful plants and flowers. She also loved to cook, make jewelry, and travel.
Kathy was united in marriage with Joe Greene on December 8, 2024, in Prairie City. They made their home between Prairie City and Newton. They enjoyed spending their honeymoon in Kathy’s favorite place, Jamaica, just this last January.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Joe Greene of Prairie City; daughter, Emily Hopman of Newton; step-sons, Anthony Greene and Brian Greene, both of Des Moines; her siblings, Franz Patterson of Newton, Shirley Johnson of Prairie City, and Silvia Patterson of Newton; nephew, Christopher (Elizabeth) Johnson and their children, Julia, Cameron, and Preston; her niece, Sara (Jason) Ohlfest and their children, Elliott and Everett; brother-in-law, William (Jodi) Greene of Des Moines; and two sisters-in-law, June (Terry) Hartson of Pella and Donna (John) Knox of Montezuma.
