Larry Eugene Beard

Larry Eugene Beard, 86, of Newton died on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 28, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 12 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.  Memorials to WesleyLife Hospice may be left at the funeral home.

Larry, the son of Andrew and Crystal (Holtz) Beard, was born on July 27, 1938, at his family’s home in Mingo. He grew up in the Mingo area and graduated from Mingo High School. Larry made his home in Newton where he owned and operated Custom Kitchen Designs.  He was a talented cabinet maker and even though he officially retired last year he still had projects he enjoyed working on. Larry was united in marriage with Kathryn Pirnat Stephens in 1998.  They enjoyed their annual trips to visit friends in Texas and spending time with family.  Larry also liked fishing, watching all kinds of sporting events, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kathryn Beard of Newton; children, Gene (Jennifer) Beard of Ankeny, Lynn (Doug) Ulrey of Newton, and Kevin (Cori) Stephens of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Marianna (Tyler) Fank, Allison (Kory) Conrad, Jordan Beard, and Lexi Beard; great-grandchildren, Remington and Maisie; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Galloway; and a brother, Lester Beard.
