Larry Dale Howard, 95, of Newton died on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Newton Village. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Iowa River Hospice or the Moose Lodge may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Larry, the son of Gilbert and Buelah (Livingston) Howard, was born on December 16, 1929, in Missouri. He grew up in Missouri and graduated from high school in Kirksville. After graduation, Larry moved to Iowa where he would begin working as a farmhand and in construction. On February 11, 1951, Larry was united in marriage with Darlyne Mae Wiley in Grundy Center. They would make their home in Newton. Larry began working at the Maytag Dairy Farm, making blue cheese and then later delivering milk. When Anderson Erickson bought out the delivery service, Larry continued working for AE. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and St Luke United Methodist Church. Larry enjoyed quail and pheasant hunting, gardening, playing cards with friends, and golfing.
Larry is survived by his children, Gary Howard (Diana May) of Newton, Donna (Bob) Fisher of Johnston, Dee Rochford of Des Moines, Steve (Lelah) Howard of Longview, Washington, and Darla (Matt) Stewart of Springfield, Missouri; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Hammond of Grinnell and Claudia (Jerry) Davis of Grinnell; and his sister-in-law, Frances Callis of Altoona. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlyne Howard; his grandson, Steve Howard; and three sisters, Doris Daines, Marcella Obermeier, and Elizabeth Piper.
