Larry Ray McKinney, 85, of Newton died on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Park Centre in Newton. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 27, at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends immediately following the graveside with a coffee time at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League may be left at the funeral home.
Larry, the son of Donald and Margaret (Johnson) McKinney, was born on August 6, 1940, in Newton. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1958. Larry then served his country in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962. For a short time after the service, Larry lived in Oklahoma before moving back to Newton. On September 1, 1973, Larry was united in marriage with Dixie Wolfe in Newton. He worked at Thomberts and then for 23 years in Tool and Die at the Maytag Company, retiring in 1992.
Larry was a member of the UAW Local 997 and the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He and Dixie enjoyed square dancing and traveling. Larry also loved woodworking, fishing, and camping.
Larry is survived by his wife, Dixie McKinney of Newton; children, Brian (Lisa) McKinney of Newton and Brenda (Scott) Chisholm of Newton; grandchildren, Kelsey (Chance) Williams, Katie Chisholm (Gabe Coady), and Kenny Skinner-Havens; his great-grandchild, Eli Williams; and brother, Clifford (Sandy) McKinney of Waterloo, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Richard “Jim” McKinney and Ronald McKinney.
