Laura Geraldine Etter, 90, of Newton died on Sunday, February 2, 2020, at Accura Healthcare of Newton West. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association may be left at the funeral home.
Laura, the daughter of James Freeman and Blanche (Teed) Skaggs, was born on July 29, 1929, in State Center. She moved many times with her family when she was young, but later made her home in Newton. After meeting at Daisy’s where Laura worked, she was united in marriage with Frederick Etter, Jr. on January 2, 1947 in Chariton. Laura was a homemaker. She was a member of the Women’s Bowling Association, Women of the Moose, and attended Community Heights Alliance Church. She enjoyed ceramics, painting, and Bluegrass music. Laura also loved animals.
Laura is survived by her children, Chuck (Sharon) Etter of Ankeny, Dwight (Denise) Etter of Ankeny, Ronald Etter of Newton, Roger (Nancee) Etter of Newton, Tony Etter of Knoxville, and Lesa (Dohn) Dean of Newton; step-daughter, Sharon Kay Herrmann of Illinois; her 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ardith Huckleberry of Waterloo and Connie Woodruff of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frederick Etter, Jr. in 1990; her brother, Bud Skaggs; and two sisters, Shirley Morris and Betty Van Baale.
