Lonny L. Cox, 80, of Newton, died Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. No services are scheduled at this time. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton is handling the arrangements.
Lonny was born February 17, 1945, in Rock Island, IL. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1964. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Lonny was united in marriage with MaryAnn Sandberg on June 27, 1969, in Omaha. Lonny worked in Plant 2 at Maytag for many years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, the UAW Local 997, the VFW, and the Jasper County Men’s Bowling Association. Lonny enjoyed golfing, fishing, watching NASCAR, and sleeping during card games. He was a member of several bowling leagues, spending several nights a week at the bowling alley. He also coached youth bowling, passing on his wealth of knowledge to many kids in Newton. Lonny was reserved, and was never one to start conversations, but also didn’t take things too seriously.
Lonny is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Cox of Newton; his sister-in-law, Elsie Sandberg of Florida; his nieces and nephew: Terri, Julie, Carol, and Larry, all of Florida; and his good friends, Don and Mary Harger and Larry and Dana Beck. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ella (Bowie) Breckenridge; his parents-in-law, Sandy and Lorraine Sandberg; brother-in-law, Larry A. Sandberg; his sister, Charlotte Carrera; and a niece, Kristen Sandberg.
Lonny is now up with many of his buddies, bowling 300s and sinking hole-in-ones.
