Marilyn J Currant, 93, of Newton died on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at Park Centre in Newton. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, December 2, at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials to Willowbrook Adult Day Care may be left at the graveside or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Marilyn, the daughter of Floyd and Florence (Brotzman) Hill, was born on April 3, 1929, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. As a young child she moved to Elmhurst, Illinois. In 1947, she graduated from Elmhurst High School where she met her future husband, Howard Currant. She then attended Knox College and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority for two years. Marilyn transferred to the University of Iowa and received her BA in English in 1951. On August 25, 1951, Marilyn and Howard were united in marriage in Elmhurst. They lived in Iowa City, Marshalltown, Newton, and Mt. Pleasant, before returning to Newton to make their home in 1966. In Newton, Marilyn worked as the Transportation Secretary for the Newton School District, with her husband at Currant Realty, and seasonally at the Maytag Dairy Farm. She later retired from Newton Manufacturing where she worked in data entry. Marilyn was an active member and held many positions at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Newton. She was also a member of PEO and many bridge clubs. Marilyn enjoyed volunteering with RSVP at the hospital and reading with children in area schools. She also liked to play piano, travel, and play games. Marilyn was always fun loving and up for a challenge.
Marilyn is survived by her five children, Kathryn Currant of Coralville, Karen (Dennis) Burkheimer of Urbandale, David (Kelly) Currant of Bondurant, Jenny (Mike) Hamand of Newton, and Deanne (Doug) Donnelly of Clive; 14 grandchildren; and her two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Currant; and her brother, Floyd (Virginia) Hill, Jr.
