Marilyn Joan Hackathorn, 90, of Newton died on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Newton Village. No services are scheduled at this time.
Marilyn, the daughter of Floyd and Opal (Konward) Carter, was born on July 28, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri. As a child, her family lived in different locations including Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. After graduating from high school in Colorado, she moved with her family to Centerville, Iowa and worked at her father’s box company. Marilyn would later get married and move to Newton, Iowa. She was a homemaker for many years, raising her four children. In the early 90’s, she moved to Texas to be with her mother. In 2010, she returned to Newton. While in Texas and then in Newton, Marilyn worked at Wal-Mart. She enjoyed doing anything crafty, including doll-making, quilting, and cake decorating.
Marilyn is survived by her children, Gary (Linda) Hackathorn of Bedord, Texas, Darrell (Pam) Hackathorn of Newton, Sharon (Dan) Wilson of Prairie City, and Lorie (Reggie) Blumeyer of Newton; her eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Carter; and a grandson, Ray Dydell.
