Marion Benac Obituary

Marion R Benac, 95, of Newton died on Monday, March 30, 2020, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell.  Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. A private family graveside will be on Saturday, April 4, at Newton Union Cemetery. The service will be streamed live on the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory’s Facebook page. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials to Our Savior Lutheran Church may be left at the funeral home. 

Marion, the son of Anton and Lena (Golic) Benac, was born on August 14, 1924 in Rathbun.  He attended Rathbun schools.  Marion served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943-1946.  Marion was united in marriage with Mary Lee Bakalar on October 29, 1949 in Newton.  Marion worked as a small press operator at the Maytag Company for 32 years, retiring in 1981.  While there he was a member of the Maytag baseball team. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as Treasurer and President.  After the closing of Grace Lutheran Church, he joined Our Savior Lutheran Church.  Marion was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and going on walks.  Marion also loved coaching and umpiring for both softball and baseball.  His family and his church were the most important in his life.

Marion is survived by his three daughters, Mary Jane O’Brien (David) Chaplin of Livingston, Texas, Loretta Tool (Perry Jones) of Newton, and Tina (Randy) Frein of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Cory O’Brien, Chris (Marie) O’Brien, Holly (Rick) Degen, Joel Tool, Skyler Tool, Joshua Lepley, Jim Koopman, Abram (Cori) Frein, and Jordan Frein; his 11 great-grandchildren; brother, John Benac of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary in 2005; daughter, Cindy Koopman; two sisters, Tina and Kathryn; and two brothers, Frank and Vince.
