Mary Jacqueline “Jacquie” Huggins, 88, of Newton died on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at her home in Park Centre. The family will greet friends with a lunch from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. A graveside service will be held following the visitation at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials to Newton Dollars for Scholars or the Newton Community Education Foundation may be left at the funeral home.
Jacquie, the daughter of Earl and Verta (Kratzer) Latimer, was born on September 3, 1933 in Bloomfield. In 8th grade, she began dating Dwight Huggins, who was a year older than her. In 1951, Jacquie graduated from Bloomfield High School and then attended UNI for a year. On July 10, 1953, she and Dwight were united in marriage in Bloomfield. They moved to follow Dwight’s career as a teacher to the Corydon and Mid-Prairie School Districts before making their home in Newton in the mid 1960’s. Dwight and Jacquie were blessed with two children, Laura and David. Jacquie was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker until the kid’s went to school. She then worked for Production Credit Association (PCA) in Newton as an Administrative Assistant. Jacquie was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church. She was a part of many Bridge Clubs and enjoyed having coffee with her friends. She also liked to bowl and golf. Jacquie had a love for chocolate, salty potato chips, and corn of the cob.
Jacquie is survived by her husband, Dwight Huggins of Newton; children, Laura (Kurt) Van Zee of Newton and David (Katie) Huggins of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Maggie (Aaron) Riggs, Kylie Van Zee, Benjamin Huggins, and Andrew Huggins; her great-grandchildren, Grant and Hallie Riggs; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, JoAnne Rupe, Lula Mae Earls, and Earla Jean Nemitz; and a brother, John Latimer.
