Mary "Jane" Firkins, the daughter of Elmer and Sadie (Lilly) Sandvig, was born on July 19, 1927, in Rolfe, Iowa. She grew up attending Rolfe schools. On December 26, 1946, Jane was united in marriage with Lyle Arthur Firkins in Rolfe. They would make their home in Newton, Iowa before completing their family with their daughter, Vickie.
Lyle and Jane were charter members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. They enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a card club for many years. She loved music and dancing with her best friend and husband of 49 years. In earlier years, she enjoyed camping with her family and loved to walk and enjoy the outdoors. But most importantly - she loved Jesus and lived with His spirit in her heart.
Jane died on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at her home at Park Centre. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lyle; son-in-law, Steve Carson; her sisters, Maurine Spiker, Donna Young; and brothers, Donald Sandvig, William “Bill” Sandvig, Arnold Sandvig, Jim Sandvig, and Jack Sandvig.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Vickie (George) Carson-Liston of Newton; grandchildren, Greg (Jennifer) Carson of Georgia and Matt (Jackie) Carson of Newton; her great-grandchildren, Bella, Gracie, Devin, Bridget (Brandon), Indy, Halle, Bree, and Cole; great-great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Isaac, Mila, and Bradley; sister, Patricia (Garlin) Carmichael; and her many nieces and nephews.
