Maxine Elizabeth McMahon, 87, of Newton died on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Park Centre. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Maxine, the daughter of Max and Gertrude (Lemke) Schmiedeke, was born on November 14, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a young teen, her family moved to Newton, Iowa. On November 17, 1951, Maxine was united in marriage with James E. McMahon, Sr. in Newton. While their three children were young, Maxine was a homemaker. She later would work as a telephone operator and in the repair department for the United Telephone Company. After retiring, Maxine loved to go on bus trips all over the country. She also enjoyed going to the casino. Maxine loved life and many holidays and family memories were made at the family’s cabin in Missouri.
Maxine is survived by her three children, James (Jill) McMahon, Jr. of Newton, John McMahon of Newton, and Jean (Jerry) Lewis of Newton; her 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James McMahon, Sr.; and a brother, Max Carl Schmiedeke, Jr.
