Melody Sue Ryther, 63, of Newton died on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, January 20, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Melody’s name (checks made payable to Amanda or Megan) may be left at the funeral home.
Melody, the daughter of Wayne and Bonnie (Marshall) Ryther, was born on November 8, 1961, in Newton. She was a lifelong resident of Newton and worked various jobs around town. Her love of horses began as a child when she owned Rex and Tootie. Melody also enjoyed journaling, music, and supporting her grandchildren at their events. She attended Least of Saints, a women’s Bible study, AA and NA meetings, along with activities at Discover Hope. Melody never knew a stranger and would engage with everyone around her.
Melody is survived by her two daughters, Amanda West of Newton and Megan (Kyle) Potter of Newton; the father of her children, Chris West; grandchildren, Brendon West, Braydon West, Marissa Burns, Mackenna Burns, Brielly Potter, and Lylah West; her brothers, Gary (Vicki) Ryther of Newton and Chuck (Tammy) Ryther of Marion; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim and Douglas in infancy; a sister, Connie Raridon; grandson, Benjamin West; and a son-in-law, Brandon Pollock.
