Melvin Eugene Harwick, 64, of Newton died on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Memorials to Hope Ministries may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Melvin, the son of Doyle and Nancy (Alton) Harwick, was born on December 7, 1957 in Los Angeles, California.  He grew up between Oklahoma and Nebraska before serving his country in the U.S. Marines After returning from the service, Melvin made his home in Oklahoma and worked for the United States Post Office.  He also was a reserve police office for 18 years for the Valley Brook, Oklahoma Police Department. On May 30, 2002, Melvin was united in marriage with Joyce Rist by a waterfall near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They lived in Oklahoma and later in Indiana before moving to Iowa in 2011. During the time, Melvin was a Boiler & Elevator Safety Inspector most recently for the State of Iowa, retiring in 2014. After retirement, they moved to Newton, Iowa. Melvin was a member of NAESA and ASME.  He was also an active member and trustee for the Kewanna Church of Christ in Indiana. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, fixing things, and traveling.  He and Joyce loved touring the United States on their motorcycle. 

Melvin is survived by his wife, Joyce Harwick of rural Newton; children, Ed (Katie) Storm of Newton, Lucas (Jamie) Harwick of Oklahoma, Olivia LaDean Bell of Oklahoma, Addam (Scotti) Orsburn of Oklahoma, Maelee (Philip) Foster of Oklahoma, Katherine (Kelly) Freeman of Oklahoma, Dustin (Treva) Storm of Newton, Wendy (Joseph) Henninger of Oklahoma, and Justin (April) Storm of West Virginia; his 23 grandchildren, Austin, Kalin, Remington, Brooke, Zachary, Kaden, Asher, Alexis, Logan, Cierra (Jeremiah), Hank, Ruston, Jolee, Maverick, Leon, Cadence, Seth, Trevina, Wren, Cole, Aiden, Sage, and Fisher; two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Oliver; his step-father, Fred Reppert of Nebraska; siblings, Robert Reppert, Susan Reppert-Johnson, Theresa Beard, and George Reppert; and his many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Doyle Harwick; mother, Nancy Reppert; and brother, Daniel Harwick.
