Michael “Mike” Dee Free, 74, of Newton died on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at his home. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 14, at Newton Union Cemetery. Memorials to Breakthrough T1D (Juvenile Diabetes Research) or the American Heart Association may be left at the graveside or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Mike, the son of Jesse and Doris (Hulsey) Free, was born on August 13, 1951, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1969. Mike was united in marriage with Janis Richards on February 22, 1969, in Newton. He worked for the Vernon Company for over 30 years. Mike was a member of the First Christian Church. He enjoyed reading, Civil War history, and classic rock.
Mike is survived by his sons, Joseph (Amy) Free of Newton and Joshua (Casey) Free of Des Moines; grandchildren, Johnathan (Emily) Free, Andrew Free, and Mason, Logan, and Kayleigh Free; and great-grandchildren, Adalynn, Kayden, Artemis, and Aneela. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janis in 2020; and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Free in 2020.
