Michelle "Shelly" Barker Obituary

Michelle “Shelly” R. Barker, 62, of Newton died on Monday, September 12, 2022, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, September 18, at the funeral home. Memorials to the Newton High School Bowling Team may be left at the funeral home. 

Shelly, the daughter of Larry and Marilyn (Meier) Longren, was born on September 23, 1959 in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1978. On November 17, 1984, Shelly was united in marriage with John Barker in Newton.  She worked for 25 years in the office at the Maytag Corporation in various positions and for the last 18 years as a Business Operations Analyst for Principal. Shelly was actively involved in women’s fastpitch softball and bowling. She also enjoyed animals and coaching youth bowling.  Shelly loved supporting her children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews in all of their activities.

Shelly is survived by her husband, John Barker of Newton; three children, Melanie (Dave) Humphrey of Newton, Brandon Barker (Nashla Fiock) currently stationed in Cuba with the U.S. Navy, and Blaine (Noella) Barker of Newton; her four grandchildren, Madison Humphrey (Grant Sexton), Gabbie Humphrey, Everleigh Barker, and Delaney Fiock; siblings, Missy (Curt) Hodges of Newton and Tony (Glenda) Longren of Pleasant Hill; and her many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Marilyn Longren.
