Nyla J (Munson) Hodges

June 11, 1937 ~ June 21, 2021 (age 84)

Nyla Jean Hodges, 84, of Newton died on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Accura Healthcare of Newton West.  A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 6, 2021, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Great Commission Fund through the Great Christian Missionary Alliance may be left at the service.

Nyla, the daughter of Elmer and Delia (Brown) Munson, was born on June 11, 1937, in Boone County.  As a child she moved to Newton where she would attend Newton Schools. Nyla was united in marriage with Joe Hodges on November 6, 1954, in Unionville, Missouri. They made their home in Newton for most of their 62 years of marriage. Nyla worked as a screener for the Vernon Company for 17 years, retiring in 1996.  She and Joe attended Community Heights Alliance Church. Nyla was a member of the Moose Lodge and she and Joe were a part of the Ritual Club.

Nyla and Joe enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, camping, boating, and playing cards. They made many friends throughout their years of travel. A favorite family spot was the swimming pool in their backyard. Nyla was a loyal and loving wife who loved to dote on her husband. If you saw them out to eat, they always sat on the same side of the booth, Joe always opened the car door for Nyla, and Nyla always made sure at family gatherings that he was the first in line.  Nyla was also the greatest mom and grandma. She was the glue that held all the family pieces together.

Nyla is survived by her children, Dixie Hodges (Tim Malone) of Newton and Danny (Connie) Hodges of Blairsburg; grandchildren, Amy (Cory) Orr of New Hampton, Christy (Todd) Friedman of Castle Rock, Colorado, Paul (Leigha) Durbala of Denver, Colorado, Cassandra (Jordan) Moser of Indianola, and Lacey (Jonathan) Randall of Omaha, Nebraska; her great-grandchildren, Treyce, Carter, Cade, Jack, Bristol, Michael, Jarrett, Cole, Octavia, Scarlet, Alise, Evelyn, Nyla, Sady, and Mabel; brother, Paul (Glenna) Munson of Des Moines; sisters-in-law, Lucinda Hagen of Tucson, Arizona and Karol Hodges of Sheridan, Wyoming; and brother-in-law, Doug (Evelyn) Hodges of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; brother, Dean Munson; sister, Dorothy Henderson; brothers-in-law, Larry Hodges and Orval Hagen; and Ted Henderson.
