Richard Dawson Obituary

Richard William Dawson, 76, of Newton, formerly of Davenport, North Dakota, died on Thursday, May 7, 2020, at Accura Healthcare of Newton West.  A private family service will be held at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. A family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.  Memorials to the Davenport, North Dakota Cemetery Fund may be mailed to the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Richard was born to Harold and Loretta (Boock) Dawson, Sr. on August 13, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York.   At the age of 8, he moved with his mother and step-father, George Cavanaugh, to Florida where he would grow up.  As an adult, Richard moved to Minneapolis with the asphalt shingle company he was working with and met his future wife, Beverly Palluck. They were united in marriage on February 27, 1965 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis.  In 1969, they returned to Florida where Richard worked as a plumber with the Local 719 Plumber Union and later as a maintenance supervisor.   In 1996, they moved to North Dakota to be closer to Beverly’s parents.  Richard retired in January of 2000. Most recently, they moved to Newton.

Richard was an active member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Kindred, North Dakota for many years and transferred his membership to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton upon moving.  Church was always a place of peace for Richard.  He was also a proud 42-year member of AA. Richard was a people person and never liked to sit still.  He could always be found tinkering on a project or inventing something to help solve a problem or make something just a little bit better.  Richard enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved little kids and babies.

Richard is survived by his wife, Beverly Dawson of Newton; children, Lori (Richard) Faulkner of Lehigh Acres, Florida, George “Jerry” (Christine) Dawson of Newton, and James (Kim White) Dawson of Villa Hills, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Christopher and David Faulkner, Tyler and Courtney Dawson, and Jessica (DeVonte) Johnson, Caitlyn (Joe) Rawe, and Erin Roberts; his three great-grandchildren, Jackson Rawe, Rose E. Faulkner, and Mariah Branch; and brother, Daniel Calhoune of Hollywood, Florida.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Novak; and two brothers, Harold Dawson, Jr. and Charles Calhoune.
