Richard, the son of Elmer and Birdie (Stacy) Ehler, was born on January 30, 1935, at his family’s home in rural Gilman. He grew up in rural Gilman and graduated from Kellogg High School. Richard served his country in the U.S. Army immediately following the Korean War working as a Diesel Mechanic. Richard was united in marriage with Sylvia Shrum on May 31, 1959, at the Pleasant View Methodist Church in rural Kellogg. In addition to farming, Richard worked on the Rock Island Railroad for his first four years of marriage. His love was always farming though and he farmed in rural Kellogg for over 70 years, growing corn, soybeans, and raising cattle. Richard was a member of the American Legion Post 111 and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting deer, elk, caribou, and bear and had taken several hunting trips to Colorado and Canada. He also loved to go fishing and believed the best fishing was in rural Iowa farm ponds.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Kristi Ehler of Newton and Susan Vititoe of Grinnell; grandchildren, Zachary Vititoe and Hunter (Kyle) Roberts; his sister-in-law, Janis Ehler of Kellogg; and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sylvia in 2020; son, Thomas Ehler; daughter, Julie Ehler; and three brothers, Max Ehler, Elmer “Henry” Ehler, and Martin (Linda) Ehler.
