Robert "Rob" Dirk Cannon

     Robert “Rob” Dirk Cannon, 49, of Newton died on Saturday, August 15, 2026.  A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 21, from 3-6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 111 in Newton.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rob’s name (checks made to Karla Lanser) will be used for a project in Rob’s honor.

     Rob, the son of Milt and Keitha (Flynn) Cannon, was born on October 30, 1976, in Marshalltown.  He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1995. Rob had worked for the last 21 years as a machinist at EFCO in Des Moines. 

     Rob loved hanging out with friends and family. That could include enjoying a cold drink, sitting by the fire, or cheering on his favorite sports teams including the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. He also loved golfing, bowling, and traveling. It was always enjoyable to see Rob out and about at local establishments because a great conversation was bound to happen.  He had a knack for always asking about others and making them smile and laugh.

     Rob is survived by his son, Trenton Cannon of Ankeny; special friend, Karla Lanser of Newton; mother, Keitha (Randy) Flake of Grinnell; father, Milt Cannon of San Tan Valley, Arizona; his sister, Jill (Chad) Hollingsworth of Grinnell; and two nieces, Megan and Ashley.  He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
