Roger W Filson

Roger W. Filson 64, of Newton died on Monday, January 25, 2021, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. The family will greet friends from 12-1:30 p.m., Friday, January 29, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Immediately following military honors will be held outside the funeral home. Memorials in Roger’s name (checks made payable to Betty Filson) may be left at the funeral home. 

Roger, the son of Ralph and Ruth (Mettler) Filson, was born on April 24, 1956 in Newton.  He was a lifelong resident of Newton; graduating in1975. Roger served his country in the U.S. Marines from 1975-1978. Upon returning, he was united in marriage with Betty Harris in Bolivar, Missouri. Roger worked at the Newton Correctional Facility for over 32 years as a prison guard, retiring in 2012.  He enjoyed hunting for pheasant, deer, and goose. 

Roger is survived by his wife, Betty Filson of Newton; children, Mancie Eicher of Des Moines and Misha Filson of Newton; grandchildren, Kayla Eicher of Newton, Jarrett Eicher of Newton, Eric Eicher of Lubbock, Texas, and Seth Edwards of Haughton, Louisiana; his eight great-grandchildren including Karsin, Kali, Knoxleigh, Maddie, Cora, and Alice; siblings, Carol (Terry) Ververka of Newton, Darlene (Dick) Machin of Newton, Robert (Pam) Filson of Illinois, and Jim Filson of Newton; and his many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Filson.
