Rose Shockey Obituary

Rose Marie (Gilliland) Otcheck Shockey, 91, of Sanborn; formerly of Grinnel and Newton, passed away at Prairie View Home in Sanborn on July 29, 2020. Rose Marie the oldest child of Hugh and Mary (Stull) Gilliland was born at home on August 31, 1928 in Montezuma.  She attended the Grinnell Public Schools. 

Rose was united in marriage to Robert Raymond Otcheck at the Grinnell First Friends Church on September 6, 1950.  He passed away suddenly on February 5, 1972.

Rose was later married to Carl Gerald Shockey on August 14, 1976 in Grinnell.  He passed away on March 27, 2017.

As a young adult Rose enjoyed rollerskating and going to the movies. Before her marriage to Robert, Rose was employed at the Jacket and Glove Factory in Grinnell.  After they were married, Robert and Rose farmed together.  After Robert’s passing she became a Certified Nurse’s Aide and a Certified Medication Aide. After her marriage to Carl, they managed apartment complexes in Indianola and Des Moines. They both enjoyed going to the Drake Bulldog basketball games and pro-baseball games.  Rose also enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, walking, and garage sales.  In addition, she liked to read and listen to music, especially gospel, country, and pop.  Carl and Rose retired to Newton in 1993.

Rose is survived by daughter, Margaret (Tom) Elgersma of Sanborn, Juanita (Hugo) Jaramillo of Waxahachie, Texas; grandchildren, Meredith (Travis) Nelson and daughter, Madeline Nelson of Whittemore, Iowa, Julia (Rev. Duane) Martin and their children, Abriella, Annika, and Asher Martin of Waxahachie, Rev. Joel (Rev. Rebecca) Johnston and sons, Oliver and Theo of Indianapolis, Indiana; and her step-grandchildren, Jacob Jaramillo of Dallas and Gabriella Jaramillo of Waxahachie. She is also survived by her step-son, Ron (Sara) Shockey of Newton and their sons, Andrew Shockey and Chris Shockey; step-grandchildren, Justin Van Sant, Brandon Van Sant, Jason Ankeny, and Robert McFall; sisters-in-law, Karol Gilliland of Marshalltown and Betty Rockhold of Linville; and well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Rose is preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Robert Otcheck and Carl Shockey; parents-in-law, August and Eunice Otcheck and Bryan and Bessie Shockey; daughter, Barbara Carol Otcheck; son-in-law, Randy Johnston; sister, Alice Johnson; brothers, Hugh Jr., Charles, John, Robert, and William Gilliland; sisters-in-law, Elaine Gilliland and marge Gilliland; and step-daughters, Jerilee Shockey and Judy Van Sant.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Newton Union Cemetery. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
