Sharie E. (Butler) McDermott

Sharie E. McDermott, 83, of Newton, died Friday, November 7, 2025, at Valley Vista Nursing and Rehab in Newton.  A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 2-3 p.m., Friday, December 12, at the funeral home.  Memorials to the ARL of Iowa can be left at the funeral home.

   Sharie, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Crawford) Butler, was born January 30, 1942, in Newton. She grew up in Baxter and graduated from Baxter High School in 1960.  Sharie was united in marriage with Tim McDermott in September of 1960. The couple owned Tim’s Place in Baxter. Sharie then worked at the Riverview Release Center in Newton for 15 years. She then moved to Iowa City, where she worked in the dietary department at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 20 years. Sharie had served as a Boy Scout leader when her children were growing up.  She enjoyed reading, playing Yahtzee, and sewing; she made many of her daughters’ clothes as they were growing up.

   Sharie is survived by her children: Paul (Chris) McDermott of Des Moines, Dee (Kevin) Kramer of Thornton, CO, Laurie (Mike) Clausen of Bennett, CO, and Trent (Marcia) McDermott of Urbandale; her grandchildren: Derek (Heaven) McDermott, Danny (Maricruz) McDermott, Carter McDermott, TJ Clausen, Jorja McDermott, Chloe Kramer, and Karissa (Angelo) Bustos; and her great-grandchildren: Kaia, Deklin, and Maya McDermott and Marley and McKenzie Bustos.  She was preceded in death by her parents; ex-husband, Tim McDermott; a granddaughter, Jenna McDermott; and 3 brothers: Gale Butler, JD Butler, and Reid Butler.
