Shirley Ann (Stevenson) Catlett Couper

Shirley Ann (Stevenson) Catlett Couper, 75, of Newton died on Friday, November 21, 2025, at her home.   A celebration of life will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Iowa Veteran’s Home or an Animal Rescue League of the Donor’s Choice may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Shirley, the daughter of Charles and Edna Mae (Hawthorne) Stevenson, was born on May 27, 1950, in Wyandotte, Michigan.  With her dad in the military, Shirley lived in many locations growing up.  Later in life, Shirley lived between California and Iowa, making her home in Iowa permanently in 1972.  Shirley married Garland Catlett and together they had three children, Alaric, Daryl, and Angeleque.  She would later marry Thomas A. Couper on December 23, 1992, in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Shirley worked in production at the Maytag Company for many years, retiring in 2003.  She was a member of the UAW Local 997.  Shirley enjoyed playing slot machines, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, going out to eat at Red Lobster, and spending time with family. She had an inquisitive mind and a deep interest for aliens and Sci-Fi. She also had a love for collecting frogs.

Shirley is survived by her children, Alaric (Michell) Catlett, Daryl (Amy) Catlett, and Angeleque Scull; honorary daughter, Julie (Randy) McConnell; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and siblings, Wesley Stevenson, Barry Stevenson, and Doninya Calvin.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom in 2019; and a brother, Edward Stevenson.
