Shirley Ann (Stewart) Havens

Shirley Ann (Stewart) Havens, 86, of Newton died on July 12, 2023, at Newton Health Care Center. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, at Palo Alto Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1-2 p.m., Tuesday, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Donor’s Choice or to the donor’s local fire or law enforcement agency may be left at the funeral home.

Shirley, the daughter of Richard F. and Rose (Klouda) Stewart, Sr., was born on February 11, 1937 in Newton.  She grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School. After high school, Shirley served her country in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at the Pentagon.  In 1967, Shirley was united in marriage with Joe Havens in Newton.  They made their home in Laurel, Gilman, and for a short time in Nebraska. During those times, Shirley worked at the Vernon Company, Holland Plastics, and Rock Communications.  In the early 1990’s, Joe and Shirley moved back to Newton. Shirley loved horses and was actively involved in the Gilman Saddle Club and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Shirley is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Lloydeana Stewart; sister-in-law, Martha Stewart; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe in 1993; a son, David in 2017; her brother, Richard Stewart, Jr.; and a sister, Janet Richards.
