Sonja, the daughter of Chris and Barbara (Eilander) Smith, was born June 15, 1958 in Newton. Upon graduation from Newton High School in 1976, she remained in town to carry on careers at Jeld-Wen in Grinnell and Newton Community School District.
Those who knew Sonja will remember her as a happy-go-lucky spirit with a great sense of humor. You rarely ever knew what she would say next, and often kept her family and friends in fits of laughter. She loved nothing more than to enjoy dinner and conversation with her beloved family. She was often heard arguing with her own dogs, Shiloh, Figgy, and Boomer, and visiting her grand-dogs, Ava and Rue. Spending time outdoors at her family’s campsite was one of her favorite summer activities, along with fishing anytime she had the opportunity.
Sonja is survived by her son Eric (Andrea Luetje) Smith of Newton; her siblings, Nancy (Jim) Anderson of Newton, Chris (Lorna) Smith of Sioux City, Tracy Smith of Newton, and Rob (Kathy) Smith of Des Moines; her nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles, Judy (Dale) Berg, Lois Eilander, Don (Joyce) Eilander, Sherry Wharff, and Cinda Shaver.
