Steve Thompson, 61, of Newton, died Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at his home in Newton. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 3, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials to the South Skunk Blues Society can be left at the funeral home.
Steve, the son of Stuart Thompson and Mary (Marshall) Henning, was born June 30, 1963, in Newton. grew up in the Newton and Kellogg areas, living with his mom and stepdad, Jim Henning. Steve graduated from Newton High School in 1982. Steve was a lifelong musician, performing with several bands over the years. He also worked for the City of Newton. He had previously worked maintaining rest areas along I-80 and had bartended in Kellogg for many years. Steve loved playing music, whether on stage or in a jam session with friends. He also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, cooking, metal detecting, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers. Steve will also be remembered as someone who went the extra mile in anything he did.
Steve is survived by his brothers, Gary (Carla) Thompson of Newton and Dave (Pam) Thompson of Baxter; his stepdad, Jim Henning of Kellogg; his stepmom, Marcia Thompson of St. Charles; his half siblings: Jimmy Henning of Kellogg, Sherri Garrett of Bussey, Mike Thompson of Hereford, AZ, Eric Thompson of St. Charles, Angie Crawley of St. Charles, and Amber Bortner of St. Charles; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
