Thomas G. Gerdes, 74, of Newton, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 21, 2024 from 1-4 p.m. at the Maytag Hotel Ballroom. Memorials in Thomas’ name (checks payable to Brett Salemink) may be left at the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.
Thomas, the son of John and Mary (Templeman) Gerdes, was born February 2, 1950 in Fort Madison, Iowa. He volunteered to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Following his service, Thomas worked as a correctional officer for the State of Iowa for many years and was a member of the Izaac Walton League. He enjoyed shooting, fishing, and played drums for many decades along Highway 61 in a variety of bands.
Thomas is survived by his brother, Craig (Lynette) Gerdes; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, David Gerdes.
