Virgil Leslie Thompson, 96, of the Malcom area died on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Marshalltown Hospital. Services are pending at this time. Memorials to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown or Malcom Fire Department may be left at the funeral home.
Virgil, the son of Cyrus and Ollie (Stuart) Thompson, was born on January 12, 1925, in Poweshiek County. He lived in the Malcom area throughout his life and worked as a farmer and welder for several years. Virgil worked at the Donaldson Company in Grinnell for nearly 40 years. On March 18, 1948, Virgil was united in marriage with Marjorie Gabel in Sheridan. Virgil served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He also volunteered at the Malcom Fire Department. Virgil enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and hunting.
Virgil is survived by his sons, Daniel (Annette) Thompson of Newton, Mike Thompson of Gilman, Tom (Sydney) Thompson of Searsboro, John Thompson of Kellogg, and George (Connie) Thompson of Montezuma; sister, Verna; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Thompson, parents, and a grandchild. Virgil’s family is especially thankful for the excellent care Virgil and Marjorie received from the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
