Wendell Lee Van Baale, 97 of Newton, died Saturday, June 28, 2025, at his home. A graveside service will be held at 11:15 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2025, at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. Memorials in Wendell’s name can be left at the service or at the funeral home. Please make checks payable to Lori Gonser or Betty Van Baale.
Wendell, the son of John Martan and Eva Gladys (Oldham) Van Baale, was born June 25, 1928, in Monroe. He grew up working on the family farm and then joined the U.S. Army in 1950, where he served in until December of 1951. He was united in marriage with Betty Lou Skaggs following his discharge and the couple made their home in Newton. Wendell worked as a machinist at The Maytag Company in Newton for many years, retiring in 1990 to raise his grandchildren. Wendell was a member of New Creation Church. He enjoyed ministering to others, painting, woodworking, mowing, and gardening. He was a jack of all trades.
Those left to honor Wendell’s memory include his grandchildren: Jesse (Breighann) Van Baale, Lori (Cody) Gonser, and Betty Van Baale; his honorary grandson, Drew Thurman; his great-grandchildren: Shelby Van Baale, Brandon Van Baale, Kohlton Van Brogen, Emily Van Sant, Hailey Gonser, Keegan Gonser, Corbin Gonser, William Clark IV, Benjamin Clark, and Patelynn Kinslow; his sister, Bessie McKeag; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; children, Kevin Van Baale and Rhonda Van Baale; and his siblings: Nathella Beamer, Horace Van Baale, Darrell Van Baale, and Annamae Wells.
