Bernard M Lammers

Bernard M. Lammers, 87, of Newton died on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Park Centre.  A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 13, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m., Friday, May 12, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory with a vigil service at 6:00 p.m.  Memorials in Bernard’s name may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Bernard, the son of Joseph N. and Esther M. (Petted) Lammers, was born on April 12, 1930 in Newton.  He graduated from Newton High School in 1948.  After graduation he worked at the Post Office for a year and then attended Iowa State for two years, prior to serving his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.  After returning from the service, Bernard received his BS in Business Administration and Industrial Engineering from Iowa State in 1960. 

On November 26, 1960, Bernard was united in marriage with Marlyn Connelly in Lindsay, Nebraska.  The lived in Illinois, Colorado, and Nebraska before returning to raise their family in Newton.  Upon returning, Bernard worked as an Industrial Engineer for the Maytag Company for 30 years, retiring in 1996.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 111, and VFW Post 1655.  Bernard enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. He also loved to umpire softball and baseball games.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Marlyn Lammers  of Newton; children, David T. (Julia) Lammers of Peoria, Illinois, Paula (Tom) Brockmeyer of Buford, Georgia, Julie (Greg) Valenti of Wildwood, Missouri, and Carol (Dave Kolbert) Lammers of Rochester, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Rachel Perez, Hannah, Claire, and Jack Lammers, Nicholas and Anna Valenti, Danielle Brockmeyer, and Karli Kolbert; great-grandchildren, David and Juliett Perez; his brother, Thomas (Kay) Lammers of Marion, Iowa; and nephews, Patrick and Matthew Lammers.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
