Duane Edward Oswalt

July 30, 1934 ~ September 17, 2016 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Duane Edward Oswalt passed away on Saturday, September 17, at his home in Newton.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 24, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.   Burial will be held at Mt. Ararat Cemetery in Centerville.  Memorials to the Mt. Ararat Cemetery may be left at the funeral home.

Duane, was born on July 30, 1934 near Albia, Iowa in Monroe County to Ralph and Bessie Pauline (Gladson) Oswalt.  They moved to Jasper County where Duane was educated in the Newton Schools.  Duane was employed at Maytag in 1950 when he entered the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War for four years.  He then returned to Maytag in Newton until retirement. 

Duane married Alice Herduin, and to this union three children were born; Gloria Rose, Michael Duane, and Kip Dean Oswalt.  Duane then married the love of his life, Lorna (Wolver) Oswalt on July 11, 1980. 

Duane was an avid hunter and loved going hunting with his best friends, Lonnie White and Greg Swihart.  Duane and Lorna also enjoyed their neighbors, especially Dan and Monica Loupee and their children, Chais and Ashlyn, whom they called “Peanut”.  They were always there for Duane and Lorna helping with their lawn or any other way they needed. 

Duane was a member of the American Legion Post 111, UAW Local 997, and AA.  He was also a former member of the Assembly of God.

Duane is survived by his daughter, Gloria Rose; son, Kip (Tammy) Oswalt; grandchildren, Christopher Oswalt and Lindsey Oswalt (Cory Houser); great-grandson, Bentlee Houser; sister-in-law, Ella Oswalt; niece, Nancy, who was a care giver for Duane allowing him to stay in his home during his last days; brother-in-law, Estel (Reta) Wolver; sister-in-law, Lila (Roland) Singley; and many other family, friends, and neighbors who Duane cherished.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorna; son, Michael; sister, Gloria Ann; and brothers, Gary (Mary) and Virgil Oswalt.
