Gerald W. “Jerry” Smith, 73, of Newton died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 7, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 6, at the funeral home. Memorials to the DaVita Dialysis Center may be left at the funeral home.
Jerry, the son of Erwin “Mann” and Sarah “Frances” (Riddle) Smith, was born on June 9, 1942 in Purdin, Missouri. He graduated from Liberty High School in Browning, Missouri in 1960. Later, Jerry received his degree in Tool and Die from Marshalltown Community College. Jerry worked as a Millwright/Carpenter for various companies through the Carpenters Local 106 and then the Carpenters Local 2158. He was a past member of the VFW Post 1655. Jerry was married to Anna McDonald Doland on February 27, 2015 in Purdin, Missouri. He enjoyed squirrel and deer hunting, woodworking, fishing, gardening, playing cards, and spending time with family. Jerry was very mechanically inclined and liked to tinker on lawn mowers and work on small engines.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Anna Smith of Newton; children, Shelly (Randy) Oldham of Newton, Bart Smith of Newton, and Barry (Michelle) Smith of Mingo; step-children, Scott Mallicoat of Newton, Jim Sutton of Newton, and Jackie (Shane) Livengood of Newton; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; his brother, Eugene Smith of Missouri; sister, Arlene DeVore of Missouri; and his special fur baby, Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy Smith in 2012; and a brother, William “Billy” Smith.
