D. Jean (Davis) Goddard

Jean’s graveside service will be 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, September 4th at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.         Conducted by Pastor Chad Jennings of the St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, September 4th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Doris Jean Davis Goddard, the daughter of Robert K. and Orpha J. Richards Davis was born on November 25, 1927 in rural Marshall County, Iowa. She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1946.

On February 2, 1947, Jean was united in marriage with Ernest J. Goddard at her parents home in Newton. They were blessed with two sons, Robert and Merlin. Jean and Ernie were married 71 years before Ernie died on December 13, 2018.

Jean was a secretary at Drake University in Des Moines for 29 years. She had also worked at Coast to Coast in Newton for several years. Jean enjoyed her family especially her grandchildren. She had enjoyed bowling and visiting with her neighbors and friends.

Jean died on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at MercyOne Newton Medical Center in Newton. She was 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ernie; daughter-in-law, Debbie Goddard; and sister, Elaine Barrett.

Those left to cherish Jean’s memory are her sons, Robert (Carol) Goddard of California and Merlin Goddard of Marshalltown; two grandchildren, Nathan (Kristine) Goddard of New Mexico and Alisha Goddard (Daniel Stouffer) of Oregon; three great-granddaughters, her sister, Ruth Rennpage of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.
