Evelyn Arlene Owens, 95, of Newton died on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Skiff Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, at the funeral home. Memorials to the Newton Village Van Fund or the First United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home.
Evelyn, the daughter of DeMoss and Stella (Parkinson) Crabb, was born on October 4, 1922 in Motor. She grew up in Motor before moving to Pleasantville where she graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1939. After graduation, Evelyn and her mom moved to California and took jobs as domestic helpers for a few years before moving back to the Pleasantville area. On May 21, 1954, Evelyn was united in marriage with Raymond Owens in Knoxville. They made their home in Monroe until 1958 when they moved to Newton. Evelyn was a homemaker. She was active in the First United Methodist Church as a circle member and also enjoyed being a member of a women’s coffee club and the Red Hat Club. While her children were young she ran the concession stand for the Babe Ruth baseball league. Evelyn enjoyed knitting, spending time with her family, and traveling.
Those left to honor Evelyn’s memory are her children, Diana (Cecil) Cumpton of Newton, Beth Johnston of Hannibal, Missouri, and Kyle (Pam) Owens of Norwalk; grandchildren, Karla, Ryan, Jennifer, Jessica, Alicia, Jacob, Sarah, Jared, Abigail, Emily, Carlye, Annie, and Jaycie; her 19 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Nancy (Mickey) Owens-Munley of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray Owens; a son, Tim Owens; son-in-law, Clint Johnston; and her brother, Ralph Crabb.
