Don was born on May 14, 1933, in rural Newton to Fred and Rosa (Tinnermeier) Rethmeier. He was united in marriage with the love of his life, Joyce Potts, on October 31, 1953. Shortly after they were married, Don served his country in the U.S. Army. Don and Joyce celebrated 69 years of marriage last fall. Together they farmed 65 years and if you would have drove by the farm last fall you would have seen him out on the tractor.
Since 1972, they have been active members of Community Heights Alliance Church where he served in various ministries. Sharing his faith was an important part of his life. In addition, Don and Joyce enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, wintering in Texas, and playing games. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Rethmeier; children, Ron (Jeannie) Rethmeier of Laurel, Jill (Redd) Watson of Fairfield, Tim (Gayle) Rethmeier of Winterset, and Carma Rethmeier of Winfield, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Verna Rethmeier. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mike Rethmeier; and 10 siblings.
