Esther Marie (Bollhoefer) Schmidt

Esther’s memorial service will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, December 14th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 9:30-11:30 a.m., Saturday, December 14th at the funeral home.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials in Esther’s memory to the Jasper County Fairgrounds. The memorials may be left at the funeral home. If you are mailing your memorial to the funeral home please add, Attn: Schmidt Family on the envelope.

Esther M. Bollhoefer Schmidt, the daughter of Christopher and Meta Propp Bollhoefer was born on May 12, 1935 near Laurel, Iowa. She graduated from Van Cleve High School in Van Cleve, Iowa.

On February 8, 1956, Esther was united in marriage with Albert H. Schmidt in rural Newton, Iowa.

Esther helped operate a dairy farm with her husband, Albert and sons for 40 years in Jasper County. She was actively involved in local activities that included her local garden club, church, ABWA, Jasper County Fair, Dairy Promoters and the Salvation Army just to name a few. Esther and her husband, Albert hosted a farm tour for many years for the elementary students in Jasper County. Esther and her sister, Grace sang at many funerals. She and her sister also played Santa and Mrs. Claus, who was who, we will never know. Esther was named Master Farm Homemaker in the late 80’s. She was well known for her cooking skills especially her bread and pecan rolls. Esther and her husband hosted several foreign exchange students and teachers over the years. She loved her family and attending her son’s and grandsons’ school and sporting events.

Esther died peacefully on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 84. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1997; two sons, a brother and a sister.

Those left to cherish Esther’s memory are her sons, Dale (Tammy) Schmidt of Newton and Paul (Chris) Schmidt of Newton; three grandsons, Tyler (Lisa) Schmidt, Ethan (Lyndi) Schmidt and Josh (Ashley) Warnell; and her five great-grandsons, Chance, Colby, Trip, Mason and Dawson.
