Kay was born on April 26, 1941, to Lester and Bernadine (Rumbaugh) Tinnermeier in Newton, Iowa, where she lived most of her life. She attended country school near Agnes Patterson Park. Kay was a member of Jolly Workers 4H Club and Rainbow for Girls. She grew up going to the First United Methodist Church. She graduated from Newton High School in 1960. She then pursued beauty school in Des Moines with her lifelong friend, Susan Blom, and she was a hairdresser at Salon de Shari. She was married to Raymond Smothers in 1963. After having five children, they parted ways in 1973. Kay was a stay-at-home mom. After all the kids were gone, Kay worked for several businesses through Progress Industries. In 2000, she moved to Waukee where two of her children lived at the time to be able to spend time with some of her grandchildren. Eventually all of her children were in the Waukee area. Kay enjoyed her family, reading, and watching Days of our Lives. She loved owning her own home in Waukee and worked hard at keeping her lawn weed-free and having the grandsons mowing for her.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Cindy (Mark) Irvin, Connie (Rusty) Richardson, Louis (Julie) Smothers, and Shawn (Amy) Smothers all of Waukee; grandchildren, Amber (Edwin) Harris, Christopher (Kaurissa) Irvin, Lance Irvin (Taylor Woebbeking), Joshua (Becca) Ellis, Richie Richardson, Ethan Smothers, Austin Smothers, Nathan Smothers, Brooke Smothers, Abby Smothers; great-grandchildren, Cade Harris, Deven Harris, Breeya Harris, Eleanor Irvin, Jasper Irvin, and Paisley Riddle. Preceding Kay in death were her parents; son, Lester; sisters, Shirley Miller and Betty Shrum; and brother-in-law John Shrum.
