Norman Willem Vander Leest

Norman Willem Vander Leest, 85, of Sully passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at his home. A celebration of life will be held from 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at the Sully Community Center. Memorials in Norman’s name to Hospice of Pella may be left at the funeral home or at the community center the day of the service.

Norman, the son of James and Artie (Zegers) Vander Leest, was born August 6, 1938 at his home south of Monroe. On June 5, 1959, Norman was united in marriage with Deloris Banks in Newton, and they were married for 64 years. After their marriage, the two lived around Sully where he farmed for most of his life as well as truck driving when he was young as well as after retirement. He loved collecting John Deere hats, tractors, watching the grandkids and great-grandkids ball games, Casey’s coffee, and going to Maid-Rite.

Norman is survived by his wife, Deloris Vander Leest; daughter, Kelley (Steve) Zuidema; grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Zuidema, Rachel (Chad) Thompson, Katie (Andy) Ratliff, and Amber Vander Leest; great-grandchildren, Casey, Hunter, Ben, Riley, and Chaelynn; siblings, Dwight (Glenda) Vander Leest and David Vander Leest; uncle, Bill (Dixie) Zegers; aunt, Helen (Fred) Schmidt; siblings-in-law, Virginia Strovers, Linda (Phil) Hennon, and Lois Vander Leest. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Jo Vander Leest; brother, Irvin Vander Leest; father and mother-in-law, Clyde and Wanda Banks; nephews, Curt Vander Leest and Matthew Vander Leest; niece, Jennifer Vander Leest; and siblings-in-law, Sally Vander Leest, James Strovers, and Robert Banks.
