Robert "Bob" Marshall Obituary

Robert “Bob” E. Marshall, 90, of Newton died on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at Newton Village Health Care Center.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 7, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church.  The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m., until the time of service on Monday at the church.  Memorials to the First United Methodist Church may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bob, the son of Clarence Eugene and Margaret (McCosh) Marshall, was born on December 31, 1927 in Grinnell. He lived in Grinnell until the age of 4 when he moved to Newton.  Bob graduated from Newton High School in 1946 and attended Drake University.  He then served his country in the U.S. Navy for two years and the U.S. Navy Reserves for four years.  

Bob was united in marriage with Helen Steenhoek on February 20, 1954 in Reasnor.  They made their home in Newton where Bob worked and later owned Coast to Coast for 45 years, retiring in 1997.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Optimist Club of Newton. He enjoyed fishing, building model ships, and going for walks.

Bob is survived by his wife, Helen Marshall of Newton; children, Jane (Jack) Bentley of Mobile, Alabama and Jim (Gina) Marshall of Newton; his grandchildren, Joshua (Kassandra) Bentley, Amy (Zach) Lautenschlager, Anna (Peter) DeRosa, Heidi (Benjamin) Bates, Michael (Leah) Bentley, Holly (Matthew) Astin, Laura (Chris) Barnard, John Bentley, Kyle (Kristina) Marshall, Emily (Joe) Buckley, and Abby (Matt) Miller; and 21 great-grandchildren, Calvin, Jack, Abbie, Warren, Betsie, Wilson, Phyllis, Prescott, Sarah, Charity, Amelia, Peter, Adah, Elijah, Annie, Ezekial, Ezra, Keegan, Logan, Clara, and Clark.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alice (Cecil) Riggenberg.
