Stephanie Sue McCumber, 46, of Newton died on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 10, at the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, September 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Stephanie’s name (checks made payable to Rodney McCumber) may be left at the church the day of the service or at the funeral home.
Stephanie, the daughter of Rodney and Susan (Pittman) McCumber, was born on March 4, 1975, in Jefferson. At a young age she moved to Newton and lived there for the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Newton High School in the class of 1993. Stephanie worked for many years at Progress Industries, then for a short while at Gates, before taking a position in customer service at Windstream, where she has been for the last three years. Stephanie was very active in the Jasper County Iowa Democrats and had ran the 2020 caucus. She was the past President of the UAW Local 997 Union and was involved with the UAW West Central Iowa CAP. Stephanie also was a member of the Ikettes. She enjoyed bowling, going to the races, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
Stephanie is survived by her father, Rodney (Mary) McCumber of Newton; sisters, Christina McCumber of Newton and Nicole (Aaron) Russell of Newton; her nieces and nephews, Emmalie, Thomas, Logan, and Grace; step-siblings, Jennifer (Gary) Patrick of Ogden, Jim (Angie) Powell of Boone, Joe (Stacy) Powell of Knoxville, and Jill Powell of Newton; 14 step nieces and nephews; two step great nephews; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Susan McCumber; maternal grandparents, Earl and Betty Pittman; and paternal grandparents, Frank and Helen McCumber.
