Sylvia Dean Ehler, 91, of Newton died on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Friday, January 31, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Kellogg Fire and Ambulance may be left at the funeral home.
Sylvia, the daughter of Francis and Frances (Harvey) Shrum, was born on June 20, 1928 in Topeka, Kansas. As a young child her family moved to Jasper County, where she would live the rest of her life. Sylvia graduated from Newton High School in 1946. On May 31, 1959, Sylvia was united in marriage with Richard Ehler at the Pleasant View Methodist Church in Kellogg. They worked as partners in their farming operation. Sylvia enjoyed gardening flowers, reading, and spending time with her family.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Richard of Newton; two daughters, Kristi Ehler of Seffner, Florida and Susan Vititoe of Grinnell; her two grandchildren, Zachary and Hunter Vititoe; and siblings, Florence Liera of Yorba Linda, California and Herbert Shrum of Los Angeles, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Thomas Scott Ehler and Julie Anne Ehler; and six siblings.
